Day Two – Place

Nestled in the corner, the point where a wall of independence and an adjacent wall of hard work collide. The space itself is far from glamorous, a simple cement block dorm room with the standard caramel colored wood bed, dresser, and desk.  Of course there are touches of the student who dwells there; posters, family photos, a classic damask espresso hued duvet cover.  The aromas of cinnamon apple scented wax and fresh brewed coffee fill the air.  The entire room is cloaked only in the glow of a simple table lamp.

What is it about sitting in my college dorm room in the nook created by my power chair and desk that draws me back?  The physical room  is not so unlike where I currently sit – a dimly light room, with a cup of coffee to my left, the same familiar computer on my lap, smooth jazz flowing into my ears.  Perhaps it is not the place that is drawing me back to yesteryear, but the time.  The luxury of having a kindred spirit in the room just across from your door.  Classes, that at the time you dreaded going to but now long to be a student again whose only job was to learn.  A syllabus full of assignments to do that would exercise your brain and stretch you beyond your cognitive limits.  The feeling that the world is your oyster.  A stark and sterile room is barely able to contain feelings of hope and anticipation about what the future may hold. When the mind’s eye looks trough the lens of nostalgia the ordinary looks majestic.

  1. I love the way you described the feeling of this place. I have a large family, and the first time I didn’t have to share a room, this is pretty much how I felt about it 🙂
